Brunei Requires Mandatory Health Insurance for Foreign Nationals Starting July 1, 2025

From July 1, 2025, the Government of Brunei will officially require all foreign nationals entering the country to possess valid health insurance coverage.

This policy is implemented to ensure that all non-citizens are adequately protected in terms of healthcare throughout their stay, whether for travel, study, employment, or long-term residence in Brunei.

📌 Applicable Groups and Minimum Insurance Requirements:

  • Domestic service workers (such as housekeepers, nannies, or caregivers) are required to have a health insurance policy with a minimum coverage of BND 100,000.
  • Business travelers and tourists staying in Brunei for a period between 15 and 90 days must obtain insurance with a minimum coverage of BND 10,000.
  • International students enrolled in educational institutions in Brunei must hold health insurance with at least BND 5,000 in coverage.
  • Private sector employees will also be subject to this requirement starting January 1, 2026, with a mandatory minimum coverage of BND 100,000.

🛂 Exemptions Apply To:

  • Diplomatic personnel, who are entering Brunei in an official capacity.
  • Transit passengers whose layover in Brunei does not exceed 3 days (72 hours).
  • Tourists entering under the 14-day visa-free policy, who are not required to present proof of health insurance for entry.

💡 Important Note for Travelers and Workers:

Before traveling to Brunei, it is essential that you arrange a health insurance plan that meets the minimum coverage required based on your visa type or purpose of visit. Health insurance is a compulsory condition for entry, and failure to present valid insurance may result in denial of entry at the border.
